WCAG Greeting Card Contest

I would like to thank all artists who participated in our greeting card contest.  We had eleven entries and the WCAG membership attending the meeting voted on which design would best represent WCAG on an all occasion greeting card.  The winner is Lynn Kessel's "Dragonfly."  Congratulations Lynn!

November Framer's Gallery Report

Yes, the busy holidays are upon us!  But we can always squeeze in some time for art.  The following WCAG members are exhibiting their works at the Framer's Gallery (601 S. Main Street in Georgetown, TX) during the month of November:  Kay Dimitri, Gretchen Hecht (GretchenArt), Lynn Kessel, Wes Odel, Luisa-Maria Potter, Leland A. Reneau and Alexis Templeton.  Their works will be on display until December 5th, so be sure to go by and take a look.

The First Friday event was, as usual, a very nice evening.  The People's Choice voting was tight.  There were three works that were tied and one piece had one more vote than the other three.  Congratulations goes to Wes Odell for his photograph, "Jazz at the Star Cafe."

December will be "mini's month."  Not only will the size be "mini," but so will the hanging fees.  All WCAG members can hang 4 "mini's" (8"x10" or smaller) for only $10, or 2 for $5, or 1 for $2.50, etc.  If you would like to participate, please contact me, Connie Hartsfield, at charts303@yahoo.com to make a reservation.

Laurel Daniel - November Guest Artist

Laurel Daniel is a well established and award winning plein air painter, formerly the president of the Plein Aiir Austin. Currently, she's a faculty member at the Austin Museum of Art.

Here's what Laurel has to say about ther Journey!

My lifelong love for nature inspires me to contemplate the landscape. As a plein air painter, I begin outside, working quickly to discern the shifting patterns of shadows and light. Back in studio, I try to paint with the same closely-observed spontaneity. Capturing a moment in time is an impossible task, but for me, an endlessly compelling one.

For more information about Laurel, you can visit her website.

October Framer's Gallery Report

Hello Art Enthusiasts!

It's October in Georgetown, Texas and the summer heat is now just a memory.  Cooler weather and great art is what's in store at the Framer's Gallery, located at 610 S. Main St.  WCAG artists Sandy Archer, Kay Dimitri, Connie Hartsfield, Gretchen Hecht (GretchenArt), Wes Odell, Leland A. Reneau, Darrel D. Schmidtt, Charlotte Sylvest and Alexis Templeton are displaying their art in the gallery through October 31st.  The quality of the art is outstanding.  In fact, the voting for the People's Choice Award (held during Georgetown's First Friday event) was very tight.  Through most of the evening there were three art pieces that bounced around in first place. At the last call for votes point, there was a three way tie.  The final votes of the evening determined the winner.

And the winner is!!!!!......   Gretchen Hecht (GretchenArt) for her "Homes and Churches in Georgetown."  Congratulations Gretchen!

Any WCAG artist who is interested in displaying their art during November should contact Connie Hartsfield, charts303@yahoo.com, and make a reservation.

October 2012 Guest Artist: Virginia Fleck

Howdy! I am not sure how to describe Virginia Fleck! Her work is based on recycling shopping bags. I think that her work is beautiful and fascinating... here how she describes herself on her website:

Since 2002, Virginia Fleck has been working exclusively with recycled plastic bags creating site specific, ecologically conscious art works that have been commissioned for several high profile, green building projects including the US Embassy in Rwanda, Whole Foods World Head Quarters in Austin TX, LeBonheur Children’s Hospital in Memphis TN and Dell Children’s Hospital in Austin TX -the first hospital in the world to attain LEED platinum certification.
Fleck’s work has been exhibited at Art Forum Berlin, Pulse Miami and  New York and Arte Fiera in Bologna Italy. Her work appears in many prestigious collections including the permanent collection the United States Embassy in Kigali, Rwanda and the Marino Golinelli collection in Bologna, Italy.  Ms. Fleck’s work has been written about and reviewed on the web and in numerous paper publications including  American Craft Magazine, Public Art Review, Sculpture Magazine, Metropolitan Home, Western Interiors and Design, Austin Home, Glasstire, Kopenhagen.dk, Voice of Germany, Apartment Therapy, MoCo Loco, Houston Press, Houston Chronicle, Dallas Morning News and the Washington Post.
Fleck is a featured artist in the book, recently published by Random House: Craft Activism: People, Ideas, and Projects from the New Community of Handmade and How You Can Join In.

She began making artwork in childhood and eventually studied at two art schools: Portland School of Art in Portland, Maine and at The School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, Massachusetts.  In 1990 Fleck moved to Austin, Texas where she continues her work as a visual artist.

WCAG Greeting Card Contest

WCAG Greeting Card Design Contest

There are times when WCAG sends out greeting cards.  It would be nice if we could send out a card featuring the art of one of our members.  Therefore, we are going to have a Greeting Card Design Contest.  Here’s how it will work:
This contest is open to current WCAG members only.

Any artist who enters the contest will agree (if their art wins the contest) to allow WCAG to use an image of the art for the purpose of creating greeting cards with the image of the winning art on them.  WCAG reserves the right to use the entire image, or any part of the image in creation of the greeting cards.  The name of the winning artist will be printed on the card.  The winning image and artist’s name will also be posted on the WCAG website and blog.  The winning art will be displayed on the WCAG wall in the Framer’s Gallery (at no charge to the artist) from October 3, 2012 to November 3, 2012.

WCAG members will bring entries to the October WCAG meeting, Tuesday, October 2, 2012.  Each member present will be given a ballot to vote on the art they feel would best represent WCAG on greeting cards.  The best design should be one that can be used for a variety of purposes; ie congratulations, sympathy, etc.

Todd White - Photographer is the Guest Artist on September 4th

The 2012-2013 Art Guild Calendar is off to a great start, as we'll have photographer Todd White speak about his work. Todd is not only an Williamson County Art Guild member, but he works as a photographer, but also spends a lot of time photographing in India and has recently started Nomadic Routes Photography, a company that leads photography tours in India. Here Todd talks a little about his passion. My interest and passion with photographing people and “life” began during a month’s stay in India. The faces of the people and their everyday activities captured and touched my heart in a way that is hard to express. After the trip to India, humanitarian visits to Egypt, Kenya, Honduras and Ethiopia set the course for the next phase of my journey into photography. This led me into the role of a "visual storyteller." Shooting in both digital and film formats brings a distinctive look to my portfolio. This assures that each client receives photographs that reflect a unique style of photography. If you want to check out Todd's work, feel free to visit his website See you on September 4th and make sure to bring your artsy friends!

Georgetown Art Center
Renovation Budget Approved

Search for Managing Organization Begins

On May 22, after working for two months with several City departments and the City Manager's office to explore and address all issues involved in renovating Old Fire Station #1, Eric Lashley, library director and staff liaison to the Arts and Culture Board, brought the $400,000 budget to Council. This budget includes widening the sidewalks and redeveloping the pocket park adjacent to the building. The total amount was far more money than the Arts and Culture Board had ever imagined they would spend for a fledgling art center, but it is a realistic budget that will preserve and enhance the building's historic status and its desirability for any number of uses. Council approved not only the budget but the draft management agreement that will be executed with the organization that is selected to run the art center.

Legal notice of the opportunity to submit proposals for managing the art center will appear in the June 3 and June 10 editions of the Williamson County Sun. The deadline for submitting proposals is June 15.
